That investment can include instruments, equipment, recording costs, photography, video production, marketing, merchandise, apparel, touring support, and even a Gig Cancellation Fund that helps compensate band members when shows fall through unexpectedly or venues fail to honor their agreements.

By the spring of 2026, SodaPop had invested more than $50,000 in Radio 45. The band’s debut full-length album was complete, and they had built a consistent live schedule of roughly 35 performances each year. Those shows generated enough income to pay the band, cover operating expenses, and gradually repay a portion of the label’s investment.

A Different Kind of Record Deal

Traditional record contracts typically require artists to repay every dollar of the label’s investment before the band receives any meaningful income.

We don’t believe that’s the right approach.

Instead, SodaPop created a profit-sharing model designed to keep musicians and crew members paid throughout the year. Rather than withholding all revenue until the advance is recovered, only 15% of the band’s earnings are applied toward repaying the label’s investment. After every performance, band members receive detailed financial reports showing exactly where every dollar came from and where it was spent. We believe complete financial transparency creates stronger partnerships and healthier bands.

The Challenge

As plans for the new album moved forward, the label began preparing for the next phase of the release.

That included manufacturing vinyl records, producing a large line of new merchandise, funding showcase events, and expanding marketing efforts. Those initiatives required additional investment beyond the original recording budget.

To make those plans financially sustainable, SodaPop asked the members of Radio 45 if the band could increase its performance schedule from approximately 35 shows per year to about 50—an average of four performances each month.

Two of the band’s members explained they could not commit to 50 dates per year — with one only able to commit to approximately 15 performances annually, and those dates would need to remain close to the Pittsburgh area.

An Economic Reality

No one was at fault.

Some of the band members simply had different availability than the project required.

Unfortunately, the reduced touring schedule fundamentally changed the economics of the band. Without enough performances, there was no realistic path to:

Repay the band’s existing advance.

Finance vinyl manufacturing and merchandise production.

Support a larger promotional campaign.

Sustain the operating costs of future live performances.

Build the momentum needed for a successful album release.

At that point, continuing the project would have required everyone involved to take on significant financial losses.

The Decision

For those reasons, SodaPop Records made the difficult decision to end its relationship with Radio 45 before the album’s release.

It wasn’t about the music.

It wasn’t about personalities.

It wasn’t about creative differences.

It came down to a simple business reality: successful independent artists need both great songs and the ability to consistently perform them for audiences.

We remain proud of everything Radio 45 accomplished and grateful for the time we spent working together. We wish every member nothing but success in whatever comes next.

In the spring of 2026, SodaPop Records made the difficult decision to part ways with Radio 45—just as the band was preparing to release its first full-length album.
