Merch on a Mission: Why We Launched SodaPop Tees
SodaPop’s newest venture isn’t really about T-shirts. It’s about building a better business around the artists who make the music.
SodaPop has always believed that making great music is only part of the job.
The other part is figuring out how to make that music — and the audience it creates — financially sustainable for the musicians behind it.
That philosophy is behind the launch of **SodaPop Tees**, our new apparel and merchandise operation built around a simple idea:
Merch on a Mission
For independent artists and touring bands, merchandise has become an increasingly important part of the economics of making music. Ticket revenue gets divided. Streaming pays fractions of a dollar. Touring brings expenses for transportation, equipment, crew, rehearsal space and countless other costs.
But when a fan walks away from a show wearing a band’s shirt, something different happens.
The artist generates meaningful revenue — and the fan becomes a walking billboard for the music.
That combination makes merchandise incredibly valuable.
“Merch has become such an important part of how touring bands actually make money that we knew we couldn’t treat it as an afterthought,” says SodaPop founder and producer C. Scott Gilbert. “If we’re serious about helping our artists earn top dollar, then we need to become master merch craftsmen ourselves.”
And that is exactly what SodaPop has set out to do.
Learning the Craft
Rather than simply uploading artwork to a print-on-demand website, SodaPop has invested in building hands-on merchandise production capabilities of its own.
That means learning the entire process: garment selection, artwork preparation, transfers, pressing, temperature, pressure, placement, packaging, presentation, photography, online merchandising and fulfillment.
In other words, we're approaching shirts the same way we approach records.
Sweat the details. Learn the equipment. Master the process. Make the finished product something we're proud to put our name on.
SodaPop Tees gives us a place to develop those skills while creating apparel that can stand on its own — funny shirts, music-inspired designs, conversation starters and original SodaPop creations.
But there is a much bigger purpose behind the presses.
Building the Machine Before Our Artists Need It
Every shirt we design teaches us something.
Every garment we press improves the process.
Every order we package helps us refine fulfillment.
Every product page, photograph, advertisement and customer interaction teaches us more about what makes merchandise sell.
And all of that knowledge becomes part of the infrastructure SodaPop can put behind its artists.
“We don't want one of our bands heading out on the road someday and suddenly asking, ‘Okay, what do we do about merch?’” Gilbert says. “We want that machine already built. We want to know what sells, how to make it, how to present it and how to deliver it profitably.”
That is the larger vision for SodaPop Tees.
We're building expertise today that can help our artists generate additional revenue tomorrow.
More Than a Shir
A great piece of band merchandise does more than generate a few dollars at the merch table.
It creates a connection.
Someone hears a song. They see a show. They become part of the audience. Then they put on a shirt and carry that connection into the rest of their life.
That's powerful marketing — but it's also something more personal.
It's belonging.
For an independent artist trying to build a career, those relationships matter.
And so does every dollar.
That is why SodaPop Tees isn't simply another online T-shirt shop.
It's another piece of the larger SodaPop ecosystem we're building around independent music — alongside recording, production, promotion, live performance and artist development.
We make the music.
We build the audience.
And now we're learning how to make some damn good shirts.
