Some Kind of Wonderful: The Single That Started SodaPop

On August 24, 2022, SodaPop Records released its very first single. More than two dozen releases later, we look back at where the story began.

On this day in 2022, SodaPop Records released its very first single: a fresh take on the rock-and-soul classic “Some Kind of Wonderful.” What seemed at the time like a single recording project would ultimately become something much bigger—the first official release from a label that has since produced and released more than two dozen songs.

The recording featured Danny Sharrow on lead vocals, Charlie Sharrow on guitars, and C. Scott Gilbert on bass guitars, keyboards and drums. Gilbert produced the recording at SodaPop House and also produced the accompanying full-length music video.

From the beginning, the idea behind SodaPop was about more than simply recording a song. “Some Kind of Wonderful” brought together the things that would eventually become central to the SodaPop approach: musicians collaborating in the studio, ambitious production, strong performances, and a finished visual presentation designed to give the music a life beyond the recording itself.

The release was accompanied by a full-length music video built around the energy and pure fun of the song. Rather than treating video as an afterthought, SodaPop approached the visual production as another part of telling the story—an approach that continues across the label‘s projects today.

Looking back four years later, “Some Kind of Wonderful” represents SodaPop at its starting line.

There was no catalog yet. No long list of releases. Just musicians making a record, turning the cameras on, and seeing where the idea might lead.

It led somewhere.

Since that first release, more than two dozen songs have been released through the SodaPop label, spanning different artists, styles and increasingly ambitious productions. The studio, the technology and the scope of the projects have continued to evolve, but the basic idea behind them remains remarkably similar to the one that started it all in 2022:

Bring talented people together. Make something great. And put it out into the world.

Four years and more than two dozen releases later, it’s especially fitting to go back and watch where the SodaPop story began.
